(KD) -- Drugstore chain CVS has been accused of promoting a generic version of erectile dysfunction drug Levitra, saying it will not sell the drug because it is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The pharmacy chain said Thursday it will continue to sell Levitra, which was approved by the FDA but not approved by the agency.
"If you're going to sell a generic drug, and you can't find it elsewhere, then you've got to be willing to sell it," said David C. Smith, director of the Office of the General Counsel in New York City. "In fact, if you're not willing to sell it, you're going to lose your market share. There is a lot of good that goes into making a drug that's approved by the FDA."
The FDA's approval of Levitra in March, but the agency said the drug is not approved by the agency. It is the first of a new class of drugs to be approved for treating ED.
